our intention

To nurture the fitra — by inspiring joyful learning, remembrance of Allah, and stewardship of His creation through our outdoor programs and curriculum.

WHAT WE OFFER

three ways to learn with us

the fitra way (our philosophy)

joyful learning | remembrance | stewardship

joyful learning

At Fitra Nature School, we believe that true education nourishes both the mind and the soul. Learning is not simply the transfer of information — it is an experience that should feel deeply meaningful. When a child is overwhelmed, their capacity to absorb and grow is diminished. This is why we are intentional about designing lessons and environments where children feel safe to share their thoughts and play an active role in their learning process. Only when a child is at peace can their heart open… and only then is when meaningful learning begins.

remembrance (dhikr)

All knowledge should lead us back to Allah. At Fitra Nature School, we believe that every lesson must awaken in the child a feeling of awe, wonder, and gratitude (shukr) toward their Creator. We are not simply teaching children facts about the natural world; we are inviting them to read the signs of Allah written all around us. There is a particular humility that comes from standing beneath a towering tree, watching the vastness of the sky, or considering the intricate design of the smallest insect. In these moments of awe, a child feels their own smallness — not in a way that diminishes them, but in a way that rightly orients the heart. The ego (nafs) quiets, and what rises in its place is wonder, gratitude, and a longing to draw nearer to Him.

stewardship (khilafah)

Allah has made us stewards (khalifahs) on this earth. At Fitra Nature School, we want children to understand that they are caretakers — of the land beneath their feet, of the creatures they share it with, and of the communities around them. Whether they're tending a garden bed, cleaning up after themselves, or leading at a farmer's market, children learn that caring for creation is not a chore — it is an act of worship. To be a good steward is to carry a little of that trust well, and to grow into the kind of person who leaves every place better than they found it.

“These nature classes were exactly what I was looking for in a post-COVID world- connecting and acclimating to nature in a safe environment, with inferences to Islamic values. Another thing I really liked was the aspect of community, and meeting like-minded families. My daughter loved having Fatima as a teacher, to help guide her and connect her to her fitrah and the natural world. She was well prepared with the lessons, and incorporated many different things such as yoga, books, songs, hammocks, hot chocolate, and bonfires. My daughter still talks about it, and would love to join again.”
